WHAT IS RAINSCREEN?

RAINSCREEN is a favoured exterior wall design.  Otherwise known as a pressure equalized RAINSCREEN WALL.  A RAINSCREEN wall seperates the rain and the wind pressure so that rain penetration is prevented.

A rainscreen wall incorporates two layers seperated by a cavity.  The exterior layer, termed the cladding, has intentional openings, which allow air into the cavity.  The openings are designed to prevent the wind blowing rain directly into the cavity and to prevent the direct entry of rain by forces such as gravity or capillarity.  The interior layer, called the air barrier, is made as airtight as possible.  When the wind blows air into the cavity, the pressure inside the cavity increases to equal the pressure of the wind.  As a result, the net pressure difference across the exterior layer is zero or close to it.  The pressure caused by the wind is then transferred to the inner airtight layer.  Rain penetration to the interior of the building does not occur because there is no pressure forcing the wind through the exterior layer and the rain doesn’t reach the inner layer where there is a pressure difference.

In summary, critical features of the RAINSCREEN principle are:

  1. An exterior barrier (RAINSCREEN) containing protected openings, which permit the passage of air but not water.
  2. A confined cavity behind the RAINSCREEN in which air pressure is essentially the same as the external air pressure.
  3. An interior barrier (wall) which substantially limits the passage of air and water vapor and is capable of withstanding all required design loads (e.g. wind and earthquake forces).
